A YouTuber who flew his plane, acted like it malfunctioned, grabbed his selfie stick, and parachuted to safety while filming the crash watched his video rack up 3.3. MILLION views, but is now facing a lengthy spell in prison.
Fast forward to 1:55 for the jump and 3:30 for the crash:
So on one hand that was pretty impressive, but on the other it was really stupid and dangerous. And so YouTuber Trevor Jacob, 29, now faces 20 years in prison after he admitted he purposefully downed the aircraft to boost views for a sponsorship deal, and also obstructed the investigation by purposely destroying the wreckage of the plane (which he also admitted).
It seems his viewers had already clocked that he staged the whole thing, as they pointed out he was already wearing a parachute and made no attempt to land the plane safely. Jacob originally told investigators that his plane lost power and that he didn’t know where the wreckage was. Of course, aviation experts doubted his account, finding that he had made no efforts to call air traffic control or to land the plane.
So this idiot basically pulled a Jussie Smollett in the sky, but I doubt he’ll get too harsh a punishment in the end, even though he deserves jail time just for being such a massive attention seeker. That’s where social media is at nowadays, though. I’m sure we’ll be seeing people like Trevor do way crazier things for views than this in the coming years.
