Growing up watching the WWE – or WWF as it was known back then – there were a lot of characters who had some truly undeniable and instantly recognisable voices and one of the greatest of these was undoubtedly Mean Gene Okerlund. The guy just had the tones that were synonymous with backstage segments and some of the dumbest interviews that you would ever witness in your life. A true legend and pioneer of sports entertainment.

Bearing in mind what an icon Mean Gene was, it’s therefore with great sadness that we’re bringing you the news that he’s passed away today. There aren’t too many details on his death at this point, but the WWE have released the following statement:
WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund, the most recognizable interviewer in sports-entertainment history, has passed away at age 76.
A sad way to start the new year for sure, but at least it gives us an excuse to take a look at some of Mean Gene’s most memorable moments over the years. Rest in power pal and thanks for the memories.
