An Iranian hermit nicknamed the “world’s dirtiest man” for not taking a shower for 60 YEARS has died at the healthy old age of 94, reports The Guardian.
Amou Haji – not his real name, but an endearing nickname given to elderly people – had actually been convinced to wash for the first time a few months ago, by the villagers in his native Dejgah.
In 2014, the Tehran Times reported that Haji would eat roadkill, smoke a pipe filled with animal poo, and believed that cleanliness would make him ill. I guess he felt pretty justified about that in his final moments given he died just a few months after his first wash in over half a decade.
So what did Haji have against soap and water? According to the people in his village, he had “emotional setbacks in his youth” that led him to refuse to wash. I can’t imagine how badly this guy must have stank given he was not only refusing to wash, but also smoking animal poo, eating dead animals he found in the road, and ‘sleeping in a hole in the ground’. Despite all this, his neighbours gave him a nice nickname and built him a open brick hut. Are they the nicest people in the world or what?
Most interestingly though, Haji lived to the great old age of 94 despite his poor hygiene, diet and the fact he smoked animal faeces. Maybe he was onto something? Being the world’s dirtiest man is a small price to pay for living well into your 90s. I just wish he hadn’t sold out his philosophy to take a shower that one time a few months ago. Who knows? He might still be with us if he hadn’t.
