Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were one of the most memorable double acts of all time when they teamed up for the first season of ‘True Detective’ back in 2014, but I don’t think that anyone out there thought that they might actually be brothers.

This is the theory that Matthew McConaughey is currently shipping though, claiming that his mother was going through her second divorce in West Texas when Harrelson’s dad was on furlough and that there are a couple of receipts etc that indicate they were in the same place and knew each other. Harrelson also thinks it might be true and revealed as such after appearing on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ the other day.
Here’s what he had to say:
Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought because we talked to Ma’ Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time… I mean, this is crazy.
We were in Greece watching the U.S. team win the World Cup and I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets.
And I said, ‘You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets’.
And I have known Ma’ Mac a long time, and she goes, ‘I knew… your father’. And it was the ellipses I found a little troubling, or interesting.
‘I knew your father’.
The year of [McConaughey’s] birth, nine months before, she was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father, Jim.
We want to go for a [DNA] test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal.
I mean he feels like he is losing a father.
But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.
That’s a pretty nuts coincidence if it’s true isn’t it? Not sure if we’ll ever find out because it looks as if Matthew McConaughey is hesitant to commit, but when it’s something as mysterious as that you’ve really gotta have a look at it haven’t you?
Come on now. If they weren’t going to do it then surely they wouldn’t be telling the whole world about it now would they? It’s probably just a viral marketing scheme for a new movie they’re doing come to think about it.
Also what the hell is Woody Harrelson talking about when he refers to the US winning the World Cup? The World Cup of what?
