I think that the ‘woke movement’ – if that’s even really a blanket term for it – does probably have some positive ideas that can be used to benefit society, but some elements of it are beyond ridiculous.

Mothercare had obviously been a baby and childrenswear chain in the UK for the past 50 years or something before it closed all its stores in 2019 and folded into Boots, with the name obviously chosen to represent the bond between a mother and their children as the store also famously sold maternity wear and breast pumps for expectant mums. However, a section of woke campaigners have decided to question the validity of the name and branded it sexist on today’s society, with Dr Charlotte Proudman saying the following:
Turns out “mothercare” is trending. Yes, the shops do still exist, this is in Bucharest. No, I am not erasing mothers or motherhood. Naming a shop motherhood reinforces patriarchal roles expected of women but not men. Buying for children is not exclusively the role of mothers. https://t.co/aSWYzzDjqn

For the love of God, rename it Parentcare.
I’ve never seen a shop named ‘Fathercare’.
No, I am not erasing mothers or motherhood.

Whilst she does have a point, I think the fact that Mothercare is a historic brand that sells clothes for mothers during child birth/childcare means that it doesn’t really need to change its name as the majority of its products are for mothers? Sure, there’s an argument that it needs to be more inclusive/not reinforcing patriarchal values, but does anyone except the most extreme woke morons actually think that?
Perhaps more importantly in this situation, Mothercare doesn’t even really exist in the vast format that it did once before and is simply tucked away in Boots somewhere, so is it really a pressing concern that needs to be addressed? There’s definitely more stuff out there that’s worth getting upset about.
Despite these fairly obvious arguments, a few people did actually agree with Proudman’s opinions – although most people did just think that they were stupid just like me:
Bit of a stretch to get offended by this when men are dressing as women to beat them at sports and get into their safe spaces.

Post-partum carnage is an amazing turn of phrase that I will be using, thank you.

I figured as much but why look into it when everything is about the pAtRiArChY

It’s not your make believe patriarchy, it’s just a shop for women and children that’s provided a service for years without your unnecessary outrage 😂
Pull yourself together dear, have you considered cannabis?

I normally agree with you, but in this case I really think it’s just not that deep. The reality is that mothers still do the majority of childrearing. The shops sell maternity wear, birth aids and post birth items (breast pads, maternity pads etc).

Well they’d hardly make any money if it were aimed at men! Have you seen how men shop?

I shopped at Mothercare in Singapore all the time for my daughter. Never once did I think “oh damn I can’t shop there. It’s exclusive to mothers only!”
Getting upset by this store name is really scraping the bottom of the barrel of things to get upset about.

Or perhaps some people just take it for what it is, a name that has been used for a long time, and also a shop where mothers to be can go to get their maternity wear. Not something the fathers to be need.

I can confirm I’m a father and bought items for my children in Mothercare and the shop name really didn’t bother me 🤷♂️

Agreed, and point is, plenty of single have spent their entire lives doing it alone. The comment basically saying mums have more rights than dads is insane
It isn’t just shops, most groups/classes etc do it too, they call them “MOTHER and baby groups” – God forbid a FATHER go
— Pclapp (@PeteClappo) April 22, 2023
I’m completely agree and have spent as much time and money in that store as my wife.
Now do mumsnet, with whom I also took huge offence during my first couple of years of parenthood.— CrikeyMikey (@MingusMike1) April 22, 2023
OK so I could only find a couple of people that agreed with her there and neither of them were women and instead old white men, who you know are probably one of the most severely oppressed groups these days – with good reason I might add – so it isn’t that surprising that they were offended too. So tough for those guys in 2023.
But seriously, Dr Charlie Proudman and the rest could try using their time to campaign against something that actually does need changing and may benefit society. There’s a lot to choose from.
For more of the same, check out when Amanda Holden said that Paul O’Grady didn’t have a woke bone in his body. Bit of a faux pas.
