It truly was a global war too, fighters descended on Korea from Colombia, Thailand, England, Australia, Ethiopia, Philippines, the list goes on. So a feeling of paranoia about the outside world is understandable, especially when you have no access to the world’s media and a chubby tyrant continuously pumps you with lies.
The war lasted 3 years and, although figures differ wildly depending on who you ask, between 1.2 and 10 million people are estimated to have died. The higher figure is about the same number as died in WWI, and I knew nothing about this war until today.
Around 30% of total casualties are thought to have been civilians caught in the cross fire of a civil war that was being supported by a shadowy bunch of super powers in a cold war. It’s difficult to visualise millions of corpses. So to put it in a clearer way, if we take the lower estimate of 1.2 million deaths, that means 1064 people died every day of the 3 years, one month and two days the war lasted. That’s 44 deaths, every hour of every day.
So, it’s not all that surprising that the North Koreans hate the Americans. As far as they are told at school and by the media and politicians, the evil US military completely destroyed their country. And that is actually kind of true.
