There’s been a lot of backlash over the Blue Origin space mission that basically involved sending an all-female crew of “astronauts” – including Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez – to space for 11 minutes. Most people think it was a complete waste of time and money, and others believe it was faked anyway.

The best take though probably came from fast food chain Wendy’s, which replied to a viral Tweet by Pop Crave by asking to launch Katy Perry back into space…

Wendy’s followed that up with another post on X saying: “When we said women in stem this isn’t what we meant.”

A bunch of outlets, such as People magazine, are now running articles where they speak to “sources close to Katy Perry” on how Wendy’s should delete their Tweets and apologise to the pop star. For example:

“Wendy’s didn’t make a joke — they made a choice. Their recent posts on X aimed at Katy Perry were not only disrespectful, but blatantly inappropriate.

“This wasn’t harmless banter, this was a billion-dollar brand using its platform to publicly demean a woman.”

“Wendy’s not adding to the conversation, they’re dragging it down and this kind of behavior contributes to a culture where women are punished for standing out or a woman daring to do something different is a target.

“Telling a woman that she should be ‘sent back’ is shameful bullying and reflects a troubling willingness to tear down in today’s society. What’s worse is that the face of Wendy’s is a woman, which makes this decision not just hypocritical, but painfully ironic.

“Everyone expected more from a brand with this kind of platform. Wendy’s should ‘do the right thing’ (the name of one of their core values) apologize and do better in the future.”

Blimey, is it really that serious? In response, Wendy’s kept it positive but stopped short of an apology in their statement:

We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy’s has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world-talent.

Fair play to Wendy’s for sticking to their guns and keeping their Tweets up. After all, the engagement was fantastic! I mean, imagine getting this upset over a fast food chain’s social media accounting trolling a celebrity who was sent into space by Jeff Bezos? It’s just a little light-hearted fun, that’s all…

There are so many things in the world that are worth of being upset about, but Wendy’s cracking jokes about Katy Perry is not one of them. If it’s Katy Perry herself sending PR people and “sources close to her” to make out like she’s a victim here, then all she’s doing is proving Wendy’s right. Relax, people!
