4. YOU CAN KILL A WELSHMAN WITH A LONGBOW IN CHESTER ON A SUNDAY: MYTH
Unfortunately not. The claim surrounding this one dates back to 1403, and a City Ordinance imposing a curfew on Welshman in Chester that was ironically issued by Henry, Prince of Wales, in response to Welsh uprisings in the city. The decree has since been superseded by boring old murder and manslaughter laws though, so put those longbows away.
The same goes for the slightly more longwinded shooting a Welshman with a longbow on Sunday in the Cathedral Close in Hereford, and killing a Scotsman within the city walls of York, other than on a Sunday — which is sure to add confusion to the whole situation. So it’s Scots Monday-Saturday and the Welsh on Sundays. Sounds geographically biased to me, why do the Scottish get such a hard time? Thanks to this post you will never again have to stop and think — ‘which day can I kill unruly Scottish clansmen on and which is the one where I am allowed to slaughter Welsh subservients to the English crown?’
You’re welcome.
