I recently put together a post with 10 horrible, ugly but ultimately fascinating creepy crawlies, but the world is so chocked full of odd-looking insects that I had to do another one. And here it is. You’re reading it now.
Evolution has designed some pretty odd solutions to insect’s problems over the last few thousand millennia, here’s some of her weirdest ideas.
1) Devil’s Flower Mantis
The Devil’s Flower Mantis or Idolomantis Diabolica have evolved to imitate the devil’s flower orchid. They’re one of the biggest mantis species growing up to five inches long, so they’d make a nice crunchy snack for a mammal or bird. The mantis doesn’t have any natural weaponry like teeth or spines, so being absolutely awesome at hiding is a definite advantage.
They’re native to Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda so you won’t find any under your pillow in Haywards Heath, unless you’re really unlucky.
