Sometimes when you think about it, it’s kinda crazy that sports where people beat the shit out of each other until they’re either gonna break a bone or are so mashed that they can’t even stand up and see straight are even allowed in society, but every now and then a video like the one below crops up that drives home just how barbaric they can be.

The clip comes courtesy of the WBF African lightweight title fight in South Africa over the weekend between Simiso Buthelezi and Siphesihle Mntungwa. Buthelezi seemed like he was just seconds away from claiming the title in the tenth round when Mntungwa fell backwards through the ropes of the ring, but instead of celebrating Buthelezi seems to have no idea what’s actually going on and instead turns to the opposite turnbuckle and starts punching thin air with nobody near him whatsoever.

Geez that is a bit scary isn’t it, especially as the guy doesn’t look like he’s completely screwed or anything. Thankfully the ref stopped the fight immediately after recognising that Buthelezi was clearly off his nut, but even so it’s pretty distressing that the guy can get to that situation in a boxing match. I’m not a humongous fan of boxing but I have seen a fair few fights in my time and I’ve never seen anything like that before.

The following update has been released about Buthelezi’s condition:

Sources share that Simiso Buthelezi is currently in stable condition in South Africa and in the next few days more will be learned as to what could have potentially caused a very scary and odd response in the ring.

Let’s hope he makes a full recovery and can get back in the ring again. He had a 4-0 record before this fight.
