The town is hoping that some of the 176 names on their list of missing people will be found but the authorities are saying they’re no longer expecting to find anyone alive.
Those that have been out searching have been hampered by deep, water-logged mud and it’s been a slow process. They’ve been digging homes out of the swamp with bare hands and cutting through roofs and walls with chainsaws. The mud is 12m deep in some places.
As you can imagine, all of the survivors in Oso are grieving hard. Basically whole families have been wiped out in the devastation. More than 30 homes were destroyed and about half of the town is still missing.
