Any old dickhead could scribble down a bunch of garbled words and pretend it was a language, but these cryptologist code breaker dudes are a little more sophisticated than you or I at spotting random guff.
The language it’s written in seems to consist of 20-30 discrete “letters” and about 35,000 “words” which is a normal range for a language. It also follows so called phonological laws, for instance some letters are more common than others, like our vowels. Some letters only ever appear at the start of a word, or the middle of the word, and some letters appear in doubles and others do not. Also, the “word entropy” (whatever the fuck that is) is very similar to English and Latin.
On the negative side there are no words over 10 characters long and no 2 letter words. On top of that, sometimes the same word is repeated up to three times on the trot. So as you can see, debate is rife and confusing.
The truth is we may never know for sure. Many are convinced because the writing seems so natural, there’s no errors and crossing out, it follows some linguistuic rules which would be hard to fake now, let alone then. Other say it is faked, code breakers from WWI and WWII had a good go at it and got nowhere. Very recently a paper published in the journal Plos One was released that points towards it being genuine, but still no one can gleam any meaning from the bastard.
Theories abound as to its meaning and origin, some beleive it is an attempt of a Western man of writing down the languages of an African or Asian tribe, some believe it was an elaborate rouse to get a nobleman to part with his cash. As you can imagine with anything that is genuinely mysterious, the nut jobs are out in force with some pretty fucked theories. Here is a short list of just some of the crack pot explanations:
The manuscript is written in early Welsh/ Cornish; the manuscript is enciphered Hebrew that describes some kind of alien technology from the future for creating DNA with sound; it’s a sixteenth-century hygiene manual; written in left-right mirrored Middle High German; NLP-like transcendental interpretation of the Voynich glyphs etc etc…
I guess we’ll never know.
