The love story between the Ukrainian refugee and the West Yorkshire dad who abandoned his family to run off with her came to heartbreaking end this week, with Tony Garnett kicking Sofiia Karkadym out of his home, then calling the police on her when she tried to kick the front door down.
We’ve already heard Tony’s side of the story, so now it’s time for Sofiia to have her say. She told The Sun that Tony treated her as a ‘dogsbody’ and gambled away his money online while relying on her benefits:
“I really loved him and thought we’d spend the rest of our lives together and have children but he changed. I think the pressure got to him.
It will be a long and hard journey for me now but I will rebuild my life and when I do I will be glad he is no longer a part of it.”
That’s the spirit! She described how ‘heartbroken’ she was after ‘believing Tony’s bulls**t’, but added:
“Ukrainian women are strong. Vladimir Putin will not destroy us — and Tony Garnett will not destroy me.”
Tony had told MailOnline a different story, insisting he was ‘100% done’ with Sofiia’s ‘irrational’ behaviour:
“I worked so hard to make this relationship work. I knew that we would look like tw*ts if we broke up because we have a media profile and all the attention that has been put on us on television and on the internet.”
Well, they can blame each other for the break-up all they want, the fact is it didn’t work out between them and that was probably the safest bet of 2022 when the story first broke back in May.
Tony had applied to be on the government’s refugee scheme after Russia invaded Ukraine, but grew impatient at how long it was taking so joined Facebook groups where Ukrainians were looking for sponsors. It was there that the 30-year-old hand-picked 22-year-old Sofiia Karkadym and invited her to stay with his family.
Within 10 days of her arrival, Tony had ditched wife Lorna and his two kids and moved into his mum’s house with Sofiia. Fast forward a few months later, and it looks like Sofiia will need to make new arrangements. Best of luck to her on finding new accommodation, and a decent, loyal partner too. Go Sofiia Go!
