We’re gonna take a quick sidestep way from the Coronavirus shitshow in this country to have a look at what’s going on over in the final days of Trump’s reign as President, where his recent actions have been described as worse than the Watergate scandal.

For those of you that don’t know, the Watergate scandal can quickly be summarised as when Richard Nixon’s administration repeatedly tried to cover up the fact that they broke into the Democrats headquarters during his re-election campaign. They were eventually discovered when Nixon was impeached and a bunch of audio recordings came to light that incriminated him in this process, ultimately leading to his resignation.
There’s a lot more to it than that obviously, but I’m just trying to give you the Cliffnotes here. It’s referred to as the Watergate scandal because the Democrat headquarters was in the Watergate building, but that’s also why anything scandalous now has -gate attached to the end of it since then -s o now you know.
Anyway, some audio recordings of Trump leaked over the weekend where he’s talking to the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and orders him to ‘find 11,780 votes’, which is pretty much him admitting that he’s trying to undermine democracy if everything he’s already done hasn’t convinced you just yet. You can take a listen to some of the highlights below:
Damn. That’s pretty incriminating stuff and if Trump wasn’t already on his way out it might be grounds for impeachment (again). In fact, Carl Bernstein – who broke the original Watergate story back in 1972 – said that it was far worse than that incident:
More @carlbernstein: “In any other presidency, this tape would be evidence enough to result in the impeachment of the president of the United States, his conviction in the Senate … and really an immediate call by the members of Congress … that he resign immediately.” pic.twitter.com/ppd8QdiIw1

It’s not déjà vu. This was something far worse than occurred in Watergate. We have both a criminal president of the United States in Donald Trump and a subversive president of the United States at the same time in this one person.
This is the ultimate smoking gun tape. It is the tape with the evidence of what this president is willing to do to undermine the electoral system and illegally, improperly and immorally try to instigate a coup.
Well I suppose this guy would know what he’s talking about, but given everything that Trump has said and done during his reign as President – or even his life – it seems unlikely that he’ll actually end up paying for it now. Especially as he’s probably going to figure out some way to grant himself a pre-emptive pardon or equivalent before he leaves office. Damn.
Wouldn’t it be great if he did finally get what was coming to him though hey? The time is now but whether or not it will actually happen is anyone’s guess.
