The Mangbetu amassed many of these riches in the early 19th century under the rule of a dude called Nabiembali. The tribe invaded and absorbed tribes, including the Madi, Bangba, Mayogo, Mayvu, Makango, and Barambo, taking over great swathes of land and holding strong influence in the region.
The Manbetu women would also style their hair to further elongate the appearance of their bonce with intricate braid work. These hair styles would take ages to do, involve a lot of skill and signify a high social status. Here’s some chaps wearing some kind of animal hide armour:
