Huge protests have erupted in Peckham after footage showed a woman accused of shoplifting and assault being manhandled by the shop owner at Peckham Hair and Cosmetics in Rye Lane, south London:

Sohail Sindo, the shopkeeper in the video, has claimed the woman assaulted him first, telling ITV News she was trying to leave with products she hadn’t paid for. Does that mean she should be manhandled and choked by a man twice the size of her? Sistah Space, a charity which supports women of African and Caribbean heritage, doesn’t think so:

“What we all saw in that video was traumatic. People do not understand how triggering this is to watch, much less to experience. This Black woman was attacked and there is no excuse for it, to add insult to injury she was arrested and the perpetrator was left alone at the scene of the crime. She has been failed by the police and violently attacked by a criminal with no accountability.”

A spokesperson for the Met said:

“We are aware of a protest outside the shop and officers are in touch with the organisers. We appeal for people to remain calm while we carry out a full investigation.”

I guess we’ll have to see where the police investigation takes things, but the pressure is definitely on after a crowd of people turned up to protest outside the store today, as organised on IG:

Seems the writing could be on the wall for Peckham Hair and Cosmetics. Though surprisingly, they haven’t been review-bombed on Google yet and are still sitting comfortably on a 4-star rating. Not too shabby.
