After a 5-year hiatus, Big Brother UK is back (on ITV2 this time) and the big news seems to be that one of the contestants, 18-year-old youth worker Hallie from London, is a trans woman. Here’s the moment she revealed this information to the rest of the house:

“Hey guys, I just have something to say. Yesterday I feel like I wasn’t being 100% authentic in myself. I thought I’d let everyone know I’m trans, if you didn’t know already. I just thought I’d make that loud and clear. I’m a trans woman if you didn’t know.”
On her plans to spend the £100k prize money on a designer vagina (provided she wins, of course):
“If I win, I’m going to get a vagina, a designer vagina, that’s what I want. And I’m going to pay my mum back for all the years that she paid for my treatments.”
Well, I guess there are worse ways of spending £100k than getting the vagina you always wanted. I mean, if you’re going to be a trans woman, at least go all the way with it, right? Not that having a vagina is compulsory to identify as a trans woman, but it does show a level of commitment that suggests you’re in it for the long haul.
All jokes aside, it’s interesting to note that seeing a trans person on Big Brother in 2023 is more controversial now than it was in 2004, when Portuguese trans woman Nadia Almada not only participated but won the entire series. I’m not sure if that means we’ve gone backwards or what, but it’s a shame that it’s seen as such a big deal now when no one batted an eyelid back then. I guess the politics and discourse around transgenderism has changed quite a bit since then, though.
