After sparking backlash by appearing on ITV News as a ‘struggling mother’, trans activist Mika Minio-Paluello has put out a thread of 17 Tweets addressing the situation.
Midway through the thread, Minio-Paluello included a photo of herself “breastfeeding” her child, and asserted that “trans women can breastfeed, and I did breastfeed my child.”
In the end, I only breastfed my child for a few weeks.
I then had to stop because I had a cancer relapse and didn’t want to poison my child.

Of course, this has opened up a whole new can of worms on social media with many people accusing Minio-Paluello of unnatural and disturbing behaviour intended to validate herself as a ‘mother’, rather than acting in the interests of her child. Others went so far as to call it child abuse and demanded social services step in to investigate the situation.
Is it actually possible for trans women to ‘breastfeed’ or ‘chestfeed’, though? Well, theoretically, it might be possible if they’re given enough supplemental hormones (injections of estrogen or prolactin, for example) to induce lactation. But it hasn’t been studied enough, and so if there is indeed any liquid coming out of Minio-Paluello’s chest in that picture, we can’t say for sure that it’s safe for human consumption.
For now, I think, if you don’t have real, proper breast milk in your breasts, maybe it’s best not to breastfeed any children. At least until we can be 100% sure you’re not f***ing up the baby, physically or otherwise. It just makes sense that this would be the priority.
