It’s a known fact that signing for Villa means you’re committing career suicide. Players come to my beloved Midlands team like horny salmon swimming up river; they’re going to have one last blast then fade away. Nilis was really highly regarded and despite only three league appearances for Villa, he’s still one of the best strikers to have ever put on a Villa shirt. One goal in three games, that’s much better than Savo Miss-a-lot-of-it.
Van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo have both named him as one of the best strikers they have ever played with — that’s the original Ronaldo for all you kids out there who wrongly think I’m referring to the Portuguese ladyboy look-a-like narcissist. Despite already being the best team in England, football experts realised that Nilis was the missing link for Villa, who were about to win the league by the time he suffered his career-ending injury three games into the 2000/01 season.
