3) Massacre Of Sri Lankan Police Officers – 1990
On June 11th, 1990 the Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Eelam (LTTE) slaughtered at least 600 Sri Lankan police officers. The LTTE had been fighting a brutal war for their independence for years. In 1987 the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) moved into Sri Lanka to try to appease the warring factions. Neither the LTTE nor their enemy President Premadasa were keen on the Indian presence. Premadasa sorted a cease-fire out in 1989 and gave LTTE loads of weapons for them to use against the IPKF. Good plan.
Under pressure from all sides the Indians removed their force and peace talks between Premadasa and LTTE began. They didn’t go very well. During peace talks the Sri Lankan military were ordered not to do anything against the LTTE. The LTTE however busied themselvesw making trenches and bunkers and basically preparing for a war. Tensions mounted.
On June 11th, LTTE surrounded Batticaloa police station and abducted three police men. An hour later 250 LTTE troops stormed and occupied the police station. Some officers were taken to airports with their families, some were taken to military academies but at least 600 were driven into the jungle. They had their hands tied and were lined up. They shot all 600 unarmed policemen there and then.
