7) Gamboru Ngala Attack – 2014
In Nigeria in early May 2014 Boko Haram militants attacked the towns of Gamboru and Ngala under the cover of darkness. They rolled in to town on motorbikes, pickup trucks and armoured personnel vehicles stolen from the Nigerian military a few months previous (how do you steal armoured vehicles?) They were brandishing AK47’s. At least 300 residents were murdered in the 12 hour attack and 11 girls were taken hostage. Most survivors escaped to Cameroon.
The militants opened fire on a night market and set fire to people’s homes. As the residents ran from the blaze they were gunned down. The final death toll was at least 336 but was probably higher.
