There are a load of different things out there that people associate with Britain – fish and chips, crappy weather, bad teeth – but I think the favourite pastime of pretty much everyone in the nation is simply going down the boozer with their friends and family and getting absolutely plastered.

This activity has been perfectly summed up in the following hilarious viral clip that comes to us from The Chestergate Pub in Stockport. The video walks around the pub and sees pretty much everyone from all walks of life in there singing along to ‘I Can’t Help Myself’ by the Four Tops.
There are people dancing around, people looking slightly bemused, people shouting at other people who clearly aren’t listening to what they’re saying, a really old woman chatting up a much younger guy and some dude lifting up his shirts and exposing his belly to the camera before shouting into it. The video has been viewed over a million times as many people felt that it captured the quintessential British pub experience perfectly.
Check out the footage below, as well as what pub owner Steph Armstrong had to say about it too:
We try and do live feeds and a bit of insight into what goes in the pub, and show everyone enjoying themselves. But we couldn’t believe it when we saw this one had reached over a million people.
There’s quite a lot of regulars here, they’re just a really lovely bunch. It’s like a little community pub, they’re all friends and there’s a lovely atmosphere where everyone sings and dances and feels safe and happy.
Yeah that’s the kind of video where you look at it and think that it looks really grim how wasted everyone is – especially because it seems like it’s really early – but then if you were actually there you would probably think it was the most fun time ever. Guess that’s the beauty of British pubs like that and why the post has gone viral and people are saying it’s the most British thing ever.
The Chestergate seems like a really great place with a great community build around it. Hopefully places like that manage to stay open given the cost of living crisis this winter. Get down and support your local boozer.
