I don’t think I’ve ever really considered why Captchas generally now always seem to have traffic lights and lorries and other road related stuff in them, but it turns out that there’s somewhat of a sinister reason behind it all.

Of course, the conspiracy theory was premiered via TikTok with a guy named sherifelsahly explaining that Google was using the data in order to teach cars how to self drive. When you think about it, that actually makes a lot of sense.
Check out what he has to say below:

These bot tests are not what you think they are. If you’ve ever done one of these security tests, you probably assume that it’s just a way to check that you’re a real person.
But that’s actually not the case. Have you ever noticed how almost all of these tests are related to road activity?
Well it turns out that your answers are being stored as data and the data is being used to teach cars how to self drive.”
Wow. Who would have thought it huh? Definitely not me.
Anyway, it does add up that this is actually real because the old Captchas used to all be words, but since Google bought the company back in 2012, we’ve seen these weird traffic ones take over instead. Hardly a coincidence is it?
I know people will bang on about corporations collecting our data without us giving permission for them to do so, but in this case I don’t actually think that it’s that bad? Surely teaching cars to self drive and moving the world towards the future is actually a good idea, at least compared to flooding us with thousands of adverts based on our preferences?
Not really sure why people are so upset about it, but I suppose there’s a big backlash against big tech and data harvesting so it’s just another thing to get angry about. No shortage of that these days.
