Jonah Platt — actor, podcaster and son of Snow White producer Marc Platt — has ripped into lead star Rachel Zegler for “hijacking” the Disney film’s press run and hurting its box office with her politically-driven social media posts.
In the lead-up to the film’s release, Zegler had Tweeted ‘f*** Donald Trump’, told his supporters she didn’t need their business, criticised the gender dynamics in the original Snow White, and expressed her support to “Free Palestine”. Disney went into such a panic over it that Marc Platt (Jonah’s dad) had to get on a plane and fly out to “speak directly” to Zegler about why this was very bad PR for their upcoming $270M blockbuster movie.
Which led to this exchange on Jonah Platt’s Instagram page after a user commented: “Your dad flew to NYC to reprimand a young actress? Any words on this? Cuz that’s creepy as hell and uncalled for.”
“You really want to do this? Yeah, my dad, the producer of [an] enormous piece of Disney IP with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, had to leave his family to fly across the country to reprimand his 20-year-old employee for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which she signed a multi-million dollar contract to get paid and do publicity for. This is called adult responsibility and accountability. And her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office.”
“Free speech does not mean you’re allowed to say whatever you want in your private employment without repercussions. Tens of thousands of people worked on that film, and she hijacked the conversation for her own immature desires at the risk of all the colleagues and crew and blue collar workers who depend on that movie to be successful. Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged.”
Interestingly, Jonah Platt has since deleted his comment, so I guess maybe his dad gave him a b0llocking and all.
In fairness to Rachel Zegler, she’s not solely to blame for Snow White bombing so hard in its opening week. After all, it was Disney’s decision to cast Zegler in their “woke” reimagining of Snow White and turn her into a ‘boss b1tch’, which emboldened her to talk crap about the original.
Aside from that, her co-star Gal Gadot is one of the most disliked celebrities on the planet right now (for obvious reasons), and is a terrible actress in her own right. Disney also made the unbelievable error of not hiring dwarf actors to play the Seven Dwarves, all because Peter Dinklage told them not to.
At the end of the day, they spent a staggering $270M on a “live-action remake” that simply isn’t very good. People are sick of the sloppy remakes Disney keeps pumping out and hopefully they will now realise it thanks to this unprecedented disaster of a movie. Onwards and upwards.
