Judging by the reactions of select Hollywood insiders, it seems Warner Bros has a huge hit on their hands with ‘The Flash’, which stars the problematic Ezra Miller and is scheduled for release in 2023.

In a new breakdown from Variety highlighting the major movie releases this year, it says experts reckon The Flash can be the biggest DC hit since The Dark Knight hit cinemas 15 years ago. High praise indeed:

“Director Andy Muschietti is hot off of the It movies, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are returning as Batman, and the plot hinges on time travel and multiverses, two of the hottest things going in superhero storytelling.

Studio insiders haven’t been this excited for Warner Bros. superhero movie since The Dark Knight movies. In fact, almost everything about The Flash points to a massive summer sensation. Almost.”

That ‘almost’ is there because production of ‘The Flash’ has been mired by controversy because of lead star Ezra Miller’s disturbing behaviour over the last couple years. Most recently, the 29-year-old was charged over a burglary, which was pretty tame compared to the time he choked a woman out, threatened to murder a man and his “slut wife”, and groomed a 12-year-old girl.

This sent Warner Bros into full on crisis mode over whether they should scrap the $200 million blockbuster, but I guess they decided not to because a) it cost $200m to make and b) they actually think it’s that good a movie. You might be thinking; well obviously DC would make out like ‘The Flash’ is one of the best films ever, but test screenings earlier this year also received the highest scores the industry has seen since The Dark Knight trilogy. So it’s looking promising in that regard.

With Miller somehow avoiding jail time and now seeking help for “complex mental health issues”, it seems the waters have calmed a little bit and Warner Bros are on course to release the film as planned this June. Pretty ironic how they will have managed an almost real-life Joker situation with Miller if the film does end up being on par with The Dark Knight. Who knows, Ezra Miller’s personal troubles might even end up being a net positive, having contributed to the hype in their own way. Let’s just hope he learns how to behave himself in time for the press runs.
