It was only a month or so ago when shocking news reports emerged from Texas that a 14 year-old student, Ahmed Mohammed, had been arrested at school for bringing in a ‘suspicious object’. The media was in frenzy, what was this suspicious object? A bomb? A gun? No, Mohammed’s only crime was bringing in a homemade clock to show his teacher, with another teacher later reporting the device.
The support he received was overwhelmingly positive with Barrack Obama inviting him to the White House and NASA also inviting him for a visit.
But all’s well that ends well, as Mohammed has recently accepted a full scholarship from the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. The scholarship includes free schooling until he finishes his undergraduate degree and relocation of his family to Qatar. Not only this, but Mohammed has met some seriously influential people such as Google Co-founder Sergey Brin, Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore and Queen Rania of Jordan.
It’s really great to see this guy overcome such persecution and being given these amazing opportunities by these institutions. We at Sick Chirpse wish him all the best.
