A lawsuit has been brought against Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a teacher, identified as Loviata Mitchell, brought two swords into the school and had students compete in a tournament which left one 16-year-old with permanent injuries to her right hand.

These weren’t no prop swords either; according to the lawsuit, one was a katana-style sword with a “long, curved blade and sharp edge,” and the second was a rapier-style sword.

After bringing out the weapons, Mitchell allegedly instructed the students to rearrange their desks and create a space in the middle of the classroom for students to fight. The fights were timed with a two-minute timer displayed on the classroom’s projector. The whole thing sounds completely awesome in theory, but obviously not the sort of thing you should be doing as a professional in charge of a class full of students.

Unfortunately, one student was eventually struck across her right forearm, wrist and hand by the katana, causing a “large and deep laceration” that began to bleed profusely. Mitchell allegedly stated “I’m in trouble!”, and ordered students to delete footage of the fights and to not tell anyone about them. Yeah OK Ms. Mitchell – have you ever even dealt with school kids before?

For what it’s worth, none of the reports I’ve read state this occurred in a special ed classroom (which would obviously make the whole thing even more f***** up), but rather in a science class. So I reckon the person who Tweeted the above footage probably thought it would get them more engagement. Nice try?

Anyway, I suppose we can’t be too shocked by anything wild that goes down at a school called Volcano Vista High School. It doesn’t even sound real! Or at least, it sounds like the sort of school where you can expect teachers to organise sword fights in lieu of actual science lessons. Shenanigans guaranteed.
