Meghan and Harry’s ‘near-catastrophic car chase’ at the hands of the paparazzi made headline news yesterday, and while many people were dubious about the idea of a two-hour high-speed car chase in the highly-congested, heavily-CCTV’d streets of NYC, I don’t think anyone expected their story to fall apart this quickly.
In an interview with the Washington Post, cab driver Sukhcharn Singh said he picked the couple up in New York and drove them for a brief period, during which it appeared they were pursued by other vehicles.
Mr Singh, who goes by ‘Sunny’, said he picked the couple and Meghan’s mum in his yellow cab at about 11pm outside the NYPD’s 19th precinct on East 67th Street. He says their bodyguard waved him down and asked: ‘Do you want a fare?’
Singh, 37, said he drove the group the block and a half west to Park Avenue before heading south. He confirmed they were pursued by two vehicles: a black Honda Accord and an older gray Honda CR-V.
‘They kept following us and were coming next to the car. They took pictures as we stopped and were filming us.’
After a few minutes, the security guard grew concerned about the photographers and asked Singh to return to the police station. The guard thought they were too exposed and didn’t want their location shared more widely. So he drove them right back to the pickup point, with the entire journey lasting roughly 10 minutes.
‘I don’t think I would call it a chase. I never felt like I was in danger.
It wasn’t like a car chase in a movie. They were quiet and seemed scared but it’s New York — it’s safe.’
Which is not quite the same narrative reported in The Telegraph yesterday, which claimed the couple’s cab was chased by a ‘gang’ of around six paparazzi vehicles, resulted in multiple near-collisions, and was basically a near Princess Diana 2.0 situation.
A spokesperson for Meghan and Harry had said:
‘Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi.
This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers.’
Who knows, maybe this cabbie was completely oblivious to the very real danger around him and Meghan & Harry really were at risk, but to me it seems more likely that this situation wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the news outlets reported or as Harry & Meghan’s spokesperson alleged.
Even the police themselves have pushed back on the story, claiming the couple were back home in 20 minutes and nothing dangerous happened. It was so nice not hearing from the Sussexes all this time, wasn’t it? Sigh.
