SXSW: A RAMBLING, LONG WINDED AND SLIGHTLY DUMB JOURNEY

Arriving in Austin, Texas at 7:30pm (Central Standard Time) ready for South By Southwest after 40 waking hours, 23 of those journeying, and I am feeling primed and pumped to bring Sick Chirpse the best (and worst, and dumbest) that SXSW has to offer.Ai?? Kidding.Ai?? I am exhausted, but it’s nothing a 12 hour sleep won’t solve.

Feast your (not-as-tired-as-my) eyes on my duller-than-ditchwater account of the long and arduous journey to Austin, and by the time you are done reading (or killing yourself) I’ll be well on my way to hooking you guys up with the goings-on here at SXSW.Ai?? Wondering what an idiot such as myself is doing over here?Ai?? Wonder no more…I am out here chirpsing some music/corporate-exec bitches for my company Awesome Merchandise (my skills in networking, aka corporate chirpsing, are as yet untested) and generally checking shit out for you guys at Sick Chirpse!

You know it will be an eventful flight when the real life Ethan Tremblay is waiting opposite you in the departure gate.Ai?? Sadly, no bumping up to first for us…my TV screen is black and white but don’t really think it warrants an upgrade (nothing wrong with Lukeai??i??s set up and a nine hour flight without me pestering him would likely be traumatic (or bliss)).Ai?? Child in front is uncontrollable, spending the whole meal (I declined, having scarfed down 8am breakfast sushi at Yo prior to take off) standing in her seat, climbing across her harried (and bad) mother and attempting to squeeze herself down the gaps between everyones seats. “I can’t guarantee she’ll sit still”ai??i??youai??i??re a parental failure! “I just don’t want her to get hurt” from a stewardess skillfully manoeuvring a trolley in an attempt to run down said child.Ai?? I’m awake, and having worrying urges to shout “I’ve got a bomb!ai???Ai?? Bit of Paul Simon to calm me down and more nap attempts. Ai??Saving the in-flight magazine for later on. Ai??It’s a 9-hour flight to Chicago and the entertainment system on the relatively old plane looks worryingly subpar.Ai?? Curly haired stewardesses evoke memories of Home Alone 2, “welcome aboard your American Airlines flight non-stop to new York”…lax security in this film perhaps inspiring young terrorists? “We know why you fly” is potentially the worst slogan I’ve ever heard, though.Ai?? Weai??i??re flying because the alternative is a week boat from Southampton to New York followed by a two/three day drive down to Austin.Ai?? Even the mentally incapacitated can probably figure out why we fly.Ai?? Because it’s faster.Ai?? Not because being crammed knee to arse, eating suspicious reheated mysteries and peeing buy xenical online cheap. into a creepy suction toilet isn’t the most enjoyable experience ever.Ai?? A little turbulence over the majestic tundra of Greenland. Ai??Out of the plane window its almost dreamlike quality is mesmerizing in the midday brightness.Ai?? The plane is sleeping, stirring with the shaking movements the 777 makes as it’s manhandled by a jet stream.Ai?? Tentatively opening window shades to let light slice through the heavy cabin air. Ai??Stewardesses prowl the aisles, carefully, quietly.Ai?? Ai??Luke reckons I slept for four hours…could this be possible?Ai?? Pretty sure it doesn’t take four hours to get from Greenland to Canada but hey ho maybe it’s my combined sleep total.Ai?? Flight does seem to have gone quite quickly.Ai?? 2 1/4 hours left…thirsty, but staff are scarce and I’m not using my call button just for a Pepsi. Ai??The amazing thing about flying with American Airlines is the service.Ai?? Sure, it’s your standard Americanised service with a smile but I’m not talking about that.Ai?? Oh no, I’m talking about the FULL-SIZE cans they furnish you with when you want a drink, the CHOICE between Pepsi brand and Coca-Cola brand…I thought there was some law against that! Ai??Oh, and now incredibly gutted I declined plane food earlier as 600 miles from Chicago and buy tadalafil, acquire zithromax. I’ve just wolfed down an awesome pizza pie. Ai??And two Speculoos (GREAT word!), which I’m assuming is the American word for caramelised biscuits.Ai?? They’re Lotus biscuits which has made my day but now I’m desperately craving more (Lotus biscuits are the crack of the biscuit world…try one and see, you’ll have eaten the packet before you know what’s hit you). So Chicago feels homely. Ai??Grey skies, clouds, cold, damp. Ai??Surrounded by people who manage to remain immaculate whilst travelling whereas I tend to end up bedraggled, tired and strangely greasy.Ai?? Everybody on this flight is going to SXSW and it would appear the networking starts before take off. Ai??I think this will be my biggest challenge of SXSW, as despite my confidence I’m exceptionally useless at introducing myself to strangers and explaining what I do and what my company does.Ai?? 30 seconds after take off and we’re enveloped in blankets of cloud so thick and white that I’m nearly a believer in the existence of heaven. Ai??It takes nearly ten minutes to free ourselves but the payoff is incredible. Ai??That never-ending cloud carpet stretches interminably into the distance and the plane banks left searching the horizon.Ai?? Sometimes I’m nearly crying over this view – nature and human endeavour combined (side note on this: I cried when Ken and Dierdre got married on Coronation Street…not to take anything away from the view, but I am a crier).

The people in front are discussing what they have planned for SXSW and I get a bit of a wrench when I think I have no plan.
