‘Stranger Things’ rocketed back onto our screens about ten days ago and broke pretty much every record ever when it comes to streaming platforms. Naturally everyone is talking about it right now as most normal people are just finishing off the massively long seven episodes around today.

Obviously the fandom for such a massive show is dangerously obsessive and that’s kinda even more creepy when you think about the fact that the show mainly revolves around a bunch of teenagers who were about 12 years old when it started. Running on from this, some huge fans of Eleven have decided to get similar tattoos to the one that she has on her wrist when she was incarcerated in the Hawkins National Laboratory and creepy Dr Brennan ran gross experiments on her and her brothers/sisters.
Sure, I get that you might like Eleven but that’s kind of a weird way to commemorate her on you permanently, right? Just get a massive Mille Bobbie Brown backpiece of her making out with Finn Wolfhard or something.
Anyway, I think that it’s kind of a strange tattoo in the first place and that’s before I even considered the association that it has with concentration camp prisoners during the Holocaust. Thankfully, someone has at least taken to Twitter to try and explain why these tattoos might be problematic:
in the holocaust, upon arriving at a concentration/death/work camp, you would get a tattoo like this. it was a process not only so that the nazi could keep track and records of people, but also to dehumanize people. they no longer had a name because- pic.twitter.com/SxJNWDWzNR

those who were sent immediately to the gas chambers upon arrival didn’t receive a number. at the beginning, the numbers were sewn onto the uniforms, but later were tattooed like this on the arm or wrist. more than 400,000 prisoner serial numbers were assigned pic.twitter.com/DPPcBvpRgp

the tattooing procedure itself was very inhumane and incredibly painful as well. hopefully i didnt get any information wrong in this thread since i made it quickly since i need to study but i will put some sources below and some reccomendations of holocaust education media pic.twitter.com/HY6gTfv63c

Yeah I thought it was weird but that really does emphasise why it’s not that cool that Eleven had the tattoo on the show and why it’s definitely not that cool for you and your buddies to get one. It’s also probably not that cool for the ‘Stranger Things’ official Instagram account to endorse them by posting a meme about them saying that it’s ‘Bitching’. Come on guys.
I know some people will probably complain about everyone being too woke about this or that the tattoos aren’t even that similar, but I kinda think in this instance you should probably respect that you shouldn’t copy anything that has an association with an event in which hundreds of thousands of people were exterminated because of their ethnicities. And it’s a really crap/dumb tattoo anyway. Don’t bother.
