The Quran actually doesn’t mention stoning as a way of dolling out punishment, but that hasn’t stopped them from integrating it into their penal systems across the Islamic world. Throughout history death by stoning has been pretty common, and the sad truth is that it’s still hanging about like a foul smell. In modern day Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iran, Yemen and some of Nigeria, “adultery of married persons” – zina al-mohensa – is punishable by stoning.
