There’s been an increased trend of pitch invasions following the end of football matches in the past few weeks and several players have warned how it was only likely to end in some kind of tragedy. This almost ended up happening last night after St Etienne fans stormed the pitch over in France and attacked their players following the team’s relegation from Ligue 1.

St Etienne were playing in the second leg of a relegation playoff against Auxerre and after the game ended in a draw, penalties were used to decide who would be competing in the top flight next season. Unfortunately for Saint Etienne, Ryad Boudebouz missed his kick and their fans immediately stormed the pitch, lighting flares and throwing them around and tackling anyone they could to the ground.

Damn that does actually look quite scary doesn’t it, especially how the St Etienne plans know that they’re coming for them and hightail it off the pitch as quick as they can. Pretty horrible how the fans then throw loads of flares at the maanger’s bench/tunnel as well – was half expecting something to explode before the end of the video.
Thankfully it looks as if all the players ended up being OK, but the powers that be really need to figure out how to stop so many pitch invasions happening before someone does end up seriously injured or worse. Not cool.
For more of the same, check out when the club owner invaded the pitch to demand a different player took a 96th minute penalty. You can imagine how that turned out.
