I can’t really think of anything I would want to listen to less than a Meghan Markle podcast, and it seems most people would agree after Spotify confirmed they won’t be renewing it for a second season.
‘Archetypes’ was a big deal when it first landed, and even managed to dethrone Joe Rogan for a minute as the #1 podcast in the world. I guess people got tired of listening to Meghan bang on about Women’s Studies 101 though, as listeners soon tuned out.
It’s not like she didn’t have any star power to help her out either; Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, Mindy Kaling, Constance Wu, and Paris Hilton were all guests on the show.
Not to worry though, because Markle has confirmed that she’ll be carrying on the podcast elsewhere. A representative for WME, Markle’s talent agency, told The Wall Street Journal:
“The team behind Archetypes remain proud of the podcast they created at Spotify. Meghan is continuing to develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform.”
No doubt there’ll be plenty of other platforms willing to fund and host the show, for the initial publicity bump if for nothing else. How many of them will pay Meghan $20 million for one season though?
The media were never too impressed by ‘Archetypes’, with Forbes calling it a ‘love fest’ with ‘not a lot of information or insight’ delivered. Sky News host Andrew Bolt said that the podcast proves Meghan has a ‘monstrous sense of self-entitlement.’
Reviews by listeners on social media weren’t much better. One person wrote that ‘Meghan seemed incapable of having a genuine conversation with her interview subjects that didn’t circle back to herself and her own victimhood’ and another wrote that Meghan simply had ‘nothing of interest to say’. The impression seems to be that if you’ve got even the vaguest grasp of feminist discourse, Meghan Markle ain’t going to teach you anything new, sadly.
