There’s been a bizarre twist in the Luis Rubiales saga this week – his mum has locked herself in a church and gone on hunger strike to protest the ‘inhumane’ treatment of her son i.e. everyone calling him a creep.
The football world (and beyond) has been calling for Rubiales to be sacked as Spanish FA chief after he planted a kiss on Jenni Hermoso after Spain won the World Cup:
Rubiales claimed the kiss was consensual and played off the outrage as no big deal. Just one problem with that – Hermoso came out and said it definitely was not consensual and she definitely did not appreciate being forcefully kissed:
The whole of Spain is backing Hermoso, with the women’s team refusing to play until Rubiales resigns and even some of the men’s national team calling for the same thing. Rubiales’s mum, Angeles Bejar, is not having any of it however and has locked herself inside the Divina Pastora church in Motril, southern Spain, until the ‘inhumane witch hunt’ of her son ends.
She’s demanding that Hermoso admits the kiss was consensual, which I don’t think is going to happen at this point. So hopefully she realises she’s being a tad overdramatic and doesn’t actually starve to death inside this church. Meanwhile, Rubiales is still refusing to step down, even after being suspended:
Spanish football federation President Luis Rubiales refused to step down over his kiss on the lips of soccer player Jenni Hermoso after Spain’s World Cup victory.

The only realistic way this ends is with Rubiales resigning, so again, it seems completely insane for his mum to lock herself inside a church and go on hunger strike like that’s going to change anything. The FA are just going to have to insist he quits and then begin their quest to find a new FA chief who doesn’t forcefully kiss female footballers on the lips. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?
