It’s always annoying when massive brands try to lecture us on what’s right and what’s wrong in society, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more bizarre example of this than toiletries giant Dove taking a stand against the casting of Brendan Fraser in ‘The Whale’.
The soap company endorsed a Twitter post that basically said it’s wrong to appropriate obesity (seriously), before adding their own two cents underneath:
Turns out quite a few people feel the same way:
Seeing nauseatingly cringe takes like this is nothing new on Twitter, of course. But for Dove to wade into the conversation and agree with it all was something I don’t think anyone expected. There’s no way they actually thought this would be good PR, right?
Unsurprisingly, the majority of Tweets on the issue involve users ripping the pxss out of Dove for talking about an industry they know nothing about:
Oof – really stumped them with that last one. It does seem a common sense argument, though. If only morbidly obese actors can play morbidly obese characters, should only blind actors play blind roles? Should only experienced firefighters play firefighter roles? Can only Barack Obama play Barack Obama? It’s called ‘acting’ for a reason, after all.
Well anyway, Dove will be hoping the dumb intern that Tweeted this hasn’t driven away too much of their customer base. Although this wouldn’t the first time that happened.
