Every so often a horror film comes out that the internet assures is the ‘scariest movie ever’, but I’ve never seen them insist as hard as they are with Skinamarink. Even the trailer will make you pee your pants a little bit:
Well, let’s be honest – despite the creepy tone, literally nothing happens in that trailer. So let’s hope the film itself isn’t just the trailer stretched out over a couple hours. That would be a shame, given the synopsis is a great premise for a horror film:
Two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished.
The Blair Witch-style vibe seems to have worked for the critics. A review from Inverse described it as “easily the most sinister and downright malevolent story put to film in a long time”, and Variety said there is “an ominous entity at work” in the film, adding: “What happens in Skinamarink sneaks up on you so quietly that you aren’t just scared; you believe.” Bloody Disgusting warned that while it’ll “instill unnerving terror” into some viewers, “others will find it too impenetrable to engage”.
The maddest part about it is that filmmaker Kyle Edward produced the movie on a $15,000 (£12,000) budget, and filmed the whole thing digitally at his childhood home in Edmonton, Canada.
Skinamarink is now showing at select cinemas around the UK and US and will be available to stream on Shudder later this year. It’s not too difficult to find online either, FYI.
