Everyone loves Wetherspoons because you know exactly what you’re getting and you know that you’re not exactly going to have to pay through the nose for it either.

However, obviously because of this I don’t think anyone is under the illusion that the food is of the highest quality, but even so I doubt anyone thought the conditions would be as gross as the ones that have been highlighted recently by the TikTok account ‘Wetherspoontruths’. The footage is believed to have been taken at The Bell Hanger in Chepstow, South Wales and shows loads of mess, mouldy food, dirty microwaves and just generally rotten conditions.

Wetherspoons themselves have taken the unusual step of releasing a statement admitting that The Bell Hanger did fall below the required standards but explaining that there had been a recent change in management and the pub now has a five star hygiene rating. Here’s what they had to say:

We believe that the photos are of The Bell Hanger in Chepstow and were taken by an ex-employee.

It is difficult to comment in detail on the photos due to a lack of context. It is true that the pub in question fell below the required standards in the past.

Since then there has been an investigation and management changes.

The latest inspection of this pub on 8 December 2022 by the Environmental Health Officer for Monmouthshire County Council resulted in the pub being awarded the maximum food hygiene rating of 5 (out of 5), which reflects the standards of cleanliness and hygiene which are now in place.

Wetherspoon pubs have an average food hygiene rating of 4.98 (out of 5). Out of Wetherspoons’ 769 pubs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 754 pubs which have been assessed under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme have been awarded a maximum 5 star rating.

So who do you trust? I have heard that Wetherspoons does have extremely high standards when it comes to hygiene so I think that these videos were probably a one off. Probably still not gonna eat there very often though myself. Just saying.
