I know that you can’t really take Rolling Stone seriously as a publication these days (we should know), but it’s still pretty shocking to see them select one of the worst rap songs of 2023 as their pick for the BEST rap song of 2023.
The track is ‘SkeeYeee’ by St.Louis, Missouri rapper Sexyy Red, who exploded onto the scene in 2023 with a catalogue of tunes mainly about getting sh@gged by big black dudes in the hood. It’s currently sitting on 25 million views:
The comments under the video itself are pure gold:
What does ‘SkeeYee’ even mean, anyway? Allow Sexyy Red to explain:
Noted. I mean, couldn’t you decipher that from the lyrics? It all makes perfect sense:
Now obviously there’s no way that the people at Rolling Stone truly believe that there were no better rap songs in 2023 than Sexyy Red’s ‘SkeeYee’. But then you’re hardly going to trigger the internet or get the blogs and social media to talk about it by going with a safe option like Nas or Kendrick or J Cole, are you? In fact, most of the top 15 looks like it was put together purely to wind up the music community:
In any case, congratulations to Sexyy Red for topping the list. She doesn’t control what people like or don’t like or choose for top 15 rap songs of the year lists, all she does is make the music and rake in the $$$. It may not be the best rap song, but it’s a rap song. You can give her that, at least.
Let’s just be grateful Rolling Stone didn’t stick the debut single from Drake’s 6-year-old son Adonis on their list. What a calamity that was.
