In Serbia at least 12 bodies have been found so far and more than 20,000 people have been forced from their homes. Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic says he won’t announce the full death toll until the waters have receded.
Flooding on this scale is horrific for any country, but many now fear even worse ahead. There are an estimated 120,000 mines in Bosnia planted during the 1992-1995 war, many of which were along river banks — marking rival factions’ territory. This will make the clear up operation potentially deadly.
Known landmine fields were carefully marked out with signs and warnings but these have been washed away and mines moved about by the force of the water.
People have been rescued from their roof tops by the army’s helicopters; private cars, trucks and lorries have been moving in their thousands to lend a hand. The full scope of the destruction is only becoming clear as the water backs off.
Landmines aren’t their only worries either…
