Jerri Nielsen
This brave woman has a similar tale to Leonid; Jerri was the sole physician at the US National Service Foundation’s Amundsea-Scott South Pole Station. She was stationed there for a year beginning in 1998. In the depths of winter when the sun literally never rises, she discovered a lump in her breast. During that time of the year there are no flights to or from the station, they are 100% cut off from the entire world. She ended up having to perform two biopsies (extracting a lump of tissue from her own breast) and self administer chemotherapy. She survived it and made it back to the US. Unfortunately a few years later the cancer finally brought her down, but not before she toured the land as a motivational speaker.
It’s incredible what people can withstand when they don’t have a choice.
