I think a lot of people have an instinctive distrust of celebrities who film themselves crying, and so it’s no surprise that Selena Gomez has faced a load of backlash over a video of her sobbing about ICE arrests and deportations ordered by Donald Trump in the first week of his Presidency.

Of course, despite deleting the video, the internet is forever:

Now obviously a lot of the backlash against Selena Gomez for this video is harsh and unwarranted, but it might’ve been a better idea to just give a sober speech where she doesn’t burst into tears and essentially give internet trolls all the ammo they need to go after her. Although at least she didn’t break out into a full-on rendition of ‘Imagine’ (we all remember how that went down).

After deleting the footage, Selena Gomez shared this message on Instagram: “Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people.”

With a net worth of $1.3 billion (!) and hundreds of millions of followers online, maybe there is something Selena Gomez can do to tackle this issue she feels so strongly about. Maybe she wants to put out another video where she calmly suggests some actions her fans could take? Leave the tears off-camera, I reckon.

For the time Selena accidentally went NSFW on Instagram and deleted the photo (but not before everyone screenshotted it), click HERE.
