A school dinner lady has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for stealing more than $1.5 million worth of chicken wings.

Vera Liddell, 68, a food service director at Harvey School District in Chicago, Illinois, pleaded guilty to ordering more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings over the course of a year from the designated provider and picking them up in a cargo van.

Now obviously as a cafeteria worker/dinner lady you can probably get away with pinching a few extra chicken wings here and there, and maybe taking the leftovers home every night and having yourself a feast with the hubby and kids. But what Vera did was considerably more than that…

What she did was use the school’s COVID funds that were intended to be used for meals for families to pick up during remote learning, but instead Vera ordered 11,000 cases of chicken wings and kept them all to herself. Literally picked up the delivery herself in a big old school van and instead of taking the food to school, just took it straight to her home in Chicago.

Now the article doesn’t mention it but I’m assuming Vera was re-selling the chicken wings, which is why she ended up getting 9 years in prison for it. Don’t get me wrong, I love chicken wings as much as anyone, but 11,000 cases is a little excessive and probably more than a sweet little 68-year-old school dinner lady can handle. Then again, maybe she was throwing massive block parties on her street and feeding the whole neighbourhood? Who knows?

In any case, she probably would have got away with it if she didn’t get so greedy. Vera began her scheme in July 2020 and continued through February 2022, which is just way too long to be carrying on a scam like this. In the end, she was busted when a business manager at the school did an audit and noticed that food costs were $300,000 (£235,000) over budget with months left in the school year.

Really though, how did she not think that the school would inevitably clock on? Lock her up for 9 years; not for stealing chicken wings, but for being an absolute moron.
