It turns out that one of the prisoners behind the New Year’s Day assault on Sara Sharif’s father at HMP Belmarsh is Steve Sansom; the man who murdered Sarah Mayhew in 2024 before scattering her body parts around Croydon, south London.
Urfan Sharif, 43, was brutally assaulted by two inmates, including Sansom, and was reportedly left ‘fighting for his life’ after having his throat and face sliced with a jagged tuna can lid.
Sharif is serving a life sentence for the murder of his 10-year-old daughter, who he subjected to a horrific campaign of torture for years before ultimately killing her. Naturally, someone like that is not going to be very popular in prison, but it’s still shocking to find out that one of his assailants is himself a particularly sadistic murderer.
Sansom, who murdered Sarah Mayhew, dismembered her corpse, and scattered it around multiple locations in Croydon, had previously been convicted in 1999 for the murder of a cab driver, after stabbing him in the throat and fleeing with £25 on Christmas Eve 1998.
A source quoted by The Sun said:
Everyone is talking about how it was Sansom who got to Sharif.
‘He and another inmate apparently pounced on him as he walked back to the wing after a shower, forced him into a cell and slashed him.
‘The other bloke, who is also a murderer, held the door shut. Sansom is a nasty piece of work and will be proud of what he has done.’
It was just three weeks ago that Sharif and his wife, Beinash Batool, were jailed for the murder of Sara. The little girl’s body was found by police to have 96 injuries in total, including 11 fractures to her spine and signs of a traumatic brain injury. It was in fact Urfan himself who called the police saying he had killed his daughter after he “beat her up too much”. Next to a pillow on her bed, he left a note reading: “I lost it.”
Unsurprisingly, Sharif has ‘a target on his back because of who he is and what he did’ to his daughter. Apparently so much so that even the prison’s most ruthless repeat murderers have it in for him. Then again, it could just have easily been a dispute over food or cigarettes or something, given that Sansom committed crimes that you could argue are just as bad as what Sharif did. Although in my view the child killer is the greater evil, it would be hard to sympathise with either side receiving the tuna can lid treatment.
Either way, can’t imagine it will be the last time that someone gets their hands on Sharif over the next 30 years, can you?
HMP Belmarsh has not commented on Sharif’s condition and who was behind the attack.
Just recently, ‘Britain’s worst rapist’ was also brutally assaulted behind bars at HMP Wakefield. It’s all going off.
