A group of Ukrainian border guards were stationed on Snake Island, in the Black Sea south of Odessa, when a Russian warship ordered them to surrender under threat of attack.
Their response: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.”
They held their ground. All 13 were killed. pic.twitter.com/GMRsXQRSX0

Ukraine’s border service said the Russians shelled and captured the island. Zelenskyy confirmed the soldiers were killed and that all would be posthumously honored. Wikipedia is already dubbing this the “Battle of Snake Island.” pic.twitter.com/eiZVlVnDMg

What a way to go. Those 13 guards knew exactly what was coming but didn’t back down or give up even a tiny bit. That clip and those words deserve to be played over and over again and immortalised for the rest of eternity. Just unbelievable amounts of bravery that so few people possess, but all 13 of these guys had in abundance.
“This is it. Should I tell him to go f*ck himself? Just in case? Russian warship, go f*ck yourself.”
The incident has already been recorded on Wiki as the Battle of Snake Island (Zmiinyi Island).
No one knows what comes next exactly, but it’s clear the Ukrainians aren’t going down without a fight. Hopefully they can hang in there long enough to inflict heavy damage on the Russian army. A lot of brave Ukrainians are going to die in the process, but who knows – maybe they can make it painful enough for Russia that even their own population turns on Putin when they see the carnage happening in real time on social media and elsewhere. Let’s see what happens.
