In what is probably the best story on the internet this week, a Russian intelligence plot failed after wary Ukrainians noticed that one of the pilots had a girlfriend that was way too hot for him.
The unlikely couple raised red flags according to journalist Christo Grozev, a Bulgarian journalist with investigative outlet Bellingcat:
It took me about 5 minutes to discover that the pilot’s “lover” (waaay too hot for him, FSB) was an FSB asset, working as a fitness trainer by day, but moonlighting as an FSB girlfriend-for-hire the rest of the time. (The Ukrainians figured that out too). pic.twitter.com/ozZLARlU6o

This all came about as Ukrainians were trying to entice Russian pilots to surrender with cash bribes and were making some progress. The Russians figured out what was happening and tried to place their own actors/secret agents in the Ukrainian program, while trying to pretend that they didn’t know the Ukrainians were trying to turn their pilots against them.
The “negotiations” between the Ukrainian recruiters and the pilots, which we filmed, started out as expected, but their tone changed quickly, suggesting the pilots were no longer talking on their own behalf but were “coached” – likely by FSB military counter-intelligence officers

Unfortunately for the Russians their masterplan fell apart after they paired this ugly Russian pilot with a smoking hot Russian babe. We all know there are many casualties to war, but is there anything for brutal and humiliating than being that Russian pilot right now? Probably thought he was in Top Gun and rolling with the hottest girls in Russia, instead he’s being cussed all over the internet because everyone took one look at him and realised there’s no way he could be dating a woman that hot.
OK it’s not like there aren’t plenty of guys out there punching above their weight, who are charismatic and charming and confident enough to land babes much more attractive than them. But this Russian pilot? Look at the guy’s haircut FFS! There was no way anyone was ever going to fall for this, especially not paranoid military personnel on high alert in the middle of a war.
