Back when Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harries were in the prime of their careers, nobody even contemplated that these two famous children’s entertainers were sick monsters who sexually assaulted women and children behind the scenes (and sometimes on live TV too).
Now of course, it’s impossible not to view their content differently. For example, this clip taken from a new ITV documentary titled Rolf Harris: Hiding In Plain Sight, which is said to tell ‘the extraordinary truth behind the rise and fall of former national treasure Rolf Harris using rare archive and exclusive testimony from those closest to the trial’:
What innocent times we lived in back then eh? Before that portion of the clip, Savile supposedly read Harris a letter that read: ‘It do say here, “Dear Jimmy, I have always wanted to see Rolf Harris doing one of his paintings, please could you fix it for me. Love, Lynn.”’
While doing the painting, Harris says to the young girl: ‘Enjoying it so far? Give them a big smile because they only see the back of your head otherwise, you see?’
He later says to Savile after the artwork is finished: ‘She is anxious to run away.’ Savile responds: ‘She is, I’ve got fast hold of her here,’ as Harris adds: ‘You stay here and enjoy it, girl.’ There is no indication the girl, Lynn, was a victim of abuse.
In 2014, Harris was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison on 12 counts of indecent assault on four female victims, including a girl under the age of 10. The now-93-year-old was released from jail in May 2017, and last year was said to be under 24-hour care after developing cancer in his neck.
Savile, who died in 2011 at the age of 84, was also exposed as a prolific child sex abuser and sex offender, but unfortunately this was only brought to life after his death so he never faced justice for it. Aside from his legacy being utterly destroyed, of course.
