No one would ever accuse Rishi Sunak of being sincere or relatable, but his attempt to be the latter backfired in his face earlier after he revealed his favourite thing to order at McDonald’s is an item that hasn’t existed since 2020.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, the former chancellor was asked about a picture posted on Instagram of him (pretending?) to pay at a McDonald’s self-service machine while on the Conservative leadership campaign trail. I mean just look at this pic – a man of the people indeed!
Asked what he had ordered, he said:
“I get a bacon roll with ketchup and the pancakes.
But if I’m with my daughters then we get the wrap. If I’m with her (my eldest daughter) we get the wrap with the hash brown.”
Welp, just one problem with that – the breakfast wrap was taken off the menu in March 2020, at the start of the COVID pandemic.
After a load of people pointed that out, a Sunak campaign source said:
“Rishi has barely seen his kids in the last two-and-a-half years since he became chancellor so there has been almost no opportunity to share a McDonald’s with them.
He’s hoping they might consider bringing the breakfast wrap back on the menu.”
Maybe that’s what he should have gone with on his campaign trail – bringing back the McDonald’s breakfast wrap. After all, according to Sky News, Liz Truss is battering him in the polls and is set to win the Tory leadership race by a decisive margin next month.
It wasn’t that long ago that a resurfaced clip showed Sunak admitting that he has no working class mates. Hard to believe, I know…
