Everyone’s been waiting for Ricky Gervais’s reaction to the Will Smith/Chris Rock slap incident, seeing as he’s the king of offending celebrities and particularly while hosting the Oscars. Well he hasn’t quite Tweeted his thoughts on the matter, but he has just shared this clip from The Office, featuring an alopecia gag:

Obviously Chris Rock’s GI Jane joke was in reference to Jada Pinkett’s balding head and has split opinion as to whether it was too harsh, especially with Will & Jada in attendance. I think we can all guess what side of the debate Gervais is on – that anyone and anything is fair game in comedy and that even if you disagree with that, physically assaulting a comedian is just a wildly emotional and unwarranted reaction, especially from a fellow entertainer who’s been in the game as long as Will Smith has.
It’s since transpired that Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars may have been 6 years in the making, after Rock cracked this joke about Jada at the 2016 Oscars:
Here’s the text if that’s too long for you to watch:
“But what happened this year? People went mad. Spike Lee went mad… Jada Pinkett Smith went mad. Will Smith went mad. Everyone went mad,” Rock said during his monologue. ” Jada said she’s not coming, protesting. Isn’t she on a TV show? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties — I wasn’t invited.” -Chris Rock.
Another harmless joke, but one directed at Jada Pinkett Smith. Has Will Smith been holding a grudge all these years? Almost makes me respect the slap if so, but not quite.
