George_E_Hale: I have the opposite problem. When I was a child my mom started to tell me a story about me that apparently had something to do with right after I was born, but my dad stopped her and said, “He doesn’t need to know about that.”
Last I’ve ever heard of it. The eerie feeling you’d imagine hasn’t quite worn off, and this was 30 years ago.
Twathammer32: I recently found out I have a half brother and both my parents don’t know I’m aware of it.
snoops12312: My fiancées daughter (6 years old) hugged a kitten to death when she was 2. We’ll not be telling her about that for a very very long time.
Dkmdlb: My son shat in his own mouth at about 6 months old. Don’t ask me how. He also got some in his ears.
MST3Kimber: Something I will probably never tell my daughter: her father wanted me to abort her. I almost did. I changed my mind a few minutes before the procedure. Her dad didn’t want anything to do with her for the first few years of her life. Now, he and I share custody and he’s a great dad. But if she ever found out that her father didn’t want her and that’s why he wasn’t around in the beginning, it would devastate her. So, it’s something her father and I promised to keep to ourselves.
Toebass: My mum always used to tell me when I was a kid that I had an older sister called Belinda, and that she was a very naughty girl, and Belinda had to be adopted out to a boarding school because she was that naughty. I believed it for years, and mum didn’t tell me the truth until I discovered MySpace and tried to find her online…
Speckleeyed: 2 things…my daughter had an identical twin who didn’t survive, and the man she knows as her father is not her father.
I was in an abusive relationship and the biological father decided he would rather us both be dead if I didn’t want to be with him so he started driving into oncoming traffic. I reacted by fleeing the vehicle at 45 mph because I saw a cop car parked a block away. I opened the door and grabbed my knees and tucked my head and rolled out and ended up really bruised and sore and killed one of the babies. But I made it the police and never saw him again.
I_snort_downvotes: My teenage football star son will occasionally put on my wife’s dresses and hang around the house. He acts like he is being funny but he does it for hours. We noticed recently that he also does it sometimes when no one is home (dresses re-arranged, not put on hangers perfectly). So he’s a masculine, studly, cross-dressing my football star in HS. This would destroy him if it got out. We think it’s OK and are happy to let him explore.
trow888: I found out that when I was six years old I was sexually assaulted. I have zero recollection of this, and my parents don’t know that I know.
ScottieDoesKnow: Smoking with my Uncle revealed to me that my dad was married before my mom and that I saw the woman almost every day. I still don’t know who it is, but I now have mini breakdowns because it could literally be anyone.
Smstride: My friend bought his dad’s old truck from his grandma for $500. When he got home his mom said, “oh hey that’s the truck you were conceived in!”. Didn’t ruin his life but he no longer owns a truck.
KGrant20: My mom recently found out about my side job doing gay porn. Awkkk.
Thomblue: My daughter is not my biological daughter. She is currently only 2yo, so the time has not come to tell her yet. I dread it as I consider her to be my child and I love her with all of my heart.
HunCity87: Not sure if it would ruin her, but I once killed my daughter’s hamster…she was at her grandma’s house overnight and I decided to air out her room while she was gone. I opened her window, but forgot to close it, unfortunately, this was during a Canadian winter…I replaced the hamster just in time, she never noticed, but I still feel bad about it years later.
Modulus0: I know my son’s Reddit username.
nShorty: Well I know my 23-year-old brother still sleeps with his Paddington teddy bear he got upon birth. It looks like a shriveled piece of foreskin by now.
Whitegirldown: My child was born with breasts that lactated. His is big now and always had extra fat cells there. He is real self conscious about it and I have always kept that piece of information from him. Unfortunately we live in such an appearance important culture. I try to teach him what being a quality human being is and his value is more than the superficial.
ErnDizzy: Not my child, but a 30-something friend of mine. She doesn’t know she’s adopted. EVERYONE else knows. Her younger brother, her friends, EVERYONE.
BanalPlatitude: My boss absolutely regrets marrying his wife and having his son. He goes so far as to say he wishes he were dead (his son, that is). Often. To colleagues. At work.
Cheesus250: Not life-ruining, but when my little sister was a baby my parents became convinced she had down syndrome. They took her to a specialist and everything. As it turned out she wasn’t mentally handicapped, just a really derpy-looking baby.
Fattymcnasty123: My step sister is the product of my step mom fucking some random European asshole while on vacation, sister doesn’t know yet, she looks like no one in the family.
