‘The Queen’s Gambit’ has been one of the more pleasant surprises of 2020, picking up rave reviews for its story about orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon as she struggles with addiction on her quest to becoming the greatest chess player in the world.

The fact the show is labeled as a ‘miniseries’ however suggests that they had only planned to run it for the set amount of episodes that aired – 7. There were never any plans to do more than one season. Following its success however, main character Anya Taylor-Joy has announced her desire to reprise the role of Beth for a second season.
Speaking to Town & Country, Anya said:
If I’ve learned anything from being in this industry, it’s never say never.
I adore the character, and I would certainly come back if I was asked to, but I do think we leave Beth in a good place.
Well wouldn’t that be great? I’m not really sure about Anya’s take that the show left Beth in a good place given that she woke up in the bathtub before the biggest chess game of her life, but I get that people think they got the ‘job done’ with one season. Like many drug/alcohol addicts however, Beth is never free from her demons, and so it’s not like there’s isn’t plenty more they can do with the character, and that’s without even getting into the dramas of the chess world.
So while most of the time it feels like TV series run too long, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ might be a show that feels too short if they leave it at one season. Anya Taylor-Joy smashed the role out of the park so why not go again? In fact – go all in with 3 seasons! Come on Netflix, make it happen.
